The UK has issued a stern warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin after a Russian spy ship entered British waters, Defence Secretary John Healey announced. The ship, Yantar, was detected 45 miles off the British coast in the English Channel earlier this week.
Yantar, described by Russia as an oceanic research vessel, is equipped with surveillance tools and submersible drones capable of reaching the ocean floor. Western nations suspect its operations include mapping critical undersea infrastructure, such as internet cables and energy pipelines.
Healey labeled the incident as “another example of growing Russian aggression” and stated that the Royal Navy had monitored the vessel with HMS Somerset and HMS Tyne throughout its time in UK waters. New rules of engagement now allow warships to approach closer, enhancing tracking capabilities.
Addressing Putin, Healey declared: “We see you, we know what you’re doing, and we will not shy away from robust action to protect this country.” He revealed that a Royal Navy submarine was authorized to surface near Yantar as a deterrent, emphasizing the UK’s preparedness to respond to threats.
This marks the second recent incursion by Yantar, following a similar incident in November when it was observed near critical infrastructure.
The UK is coordinating with NATO allies to strengthen surveillance, with Royal Air Force aircraft joining efforts to safeguard infrastructure in the Baltic Sea. This comes after an undersea cable between Estonia and Finland was damaged in December, raising concerns about Russian involvement.
Shadow Defence Secretary James Cartlidge endorsed the government’s measures, stating that these actions send a clear message to Russia: “We will not be intimidated.”
The incident underscores the need for heightened vigilance and increased defense spending amid escalating tensions with Moscow.
