Switzerland and Serbia have both stepped forward as potential hosts for a meeting between incoming US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The announcement follows Trump’s recent remarks about plans for talks with Putin, aiming to bring an end to the war in Ukraine.
As Trump prepares to return to the White House next Monday, he has reaffirmed his commitment to fulfilling his campaign promise of resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict. His team is actively working on arrangements for the proposed meeting.
Switzerland has expressed its readiness to host the discussions, with the Swiss Foreign Ministry confirming its willingness to facilitate peace talks. However, a potential challenge lies in the International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant against Putin, stemming from allegations of his involvement in the deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia. Despite Switzerland’s legal obligation to detain Putin, Nicolas Bideau, head of communications for Switzerland’s Department of Foreign Affairs, noted that exceptions could be granted for peace negotiations.
Serbia has also positioned itself as a suitable venue. President Aleksandar Vučić emphasized that his country’s neutrality and the popularity of both leaders in Serbia make it an ideal location.
“Serbia offers unparalleled support for President Trump outside the United States,” Vučić stated in an interview with the Serbian broadcaster RTS. He added that President Putin remains highly respected in Serbia, making it a unique platform for such a meeting. Vučić further highlighted Serbia’s status as a non-NATO member, which reinforces its neutrality in global conflicts.
The Kremlin has expressed its willingness to engage in talks, and Trump’s National Security Adviser Mike Waltz confirmed that preparations for the meeting are underway. Specific details, such as whether Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will participate, are still being finalized. Waltz suggested that an initial phone call between Trump and Putin could take place in the coming weeks.
Trump has pledged to bring Ukraine and Russia to the negotiating table, even claiming he could end the war within a single day. However, his criticism of US aid to Ukraine has raised concerns among allies and security experts.
Ukraine remains wary of potential shifts in US policy under Trump’s leadership. Meanwhile, the Biden administration has accelerated its military support to Kyiv, recently approving a $500 million weapons package to strengthen Ukraine’s position ahead of possible peace talks.
The offers from Switzerland and Serbia reflect a shared eagerness to facilitate global peace efforts. However, significant legal and diplomatic hurdles remain before the meeting can take place. Whether Trump’s initiative will lead to meaningful progress in resolving the conflict is still uncertain.
