California Governor Gavin Newsom has issued an executive order temporarily suspending certain environmental laws to accelerate rebuilding in wildfire-stricken areas. Provisions of the California Environmental Quality Act and the California Coastal Act will be eased to eliminate delays in restoring homes and businesses destroyed by recent fires.
The directive also tasks state agencies with identifying additional permitting processes that can be safely streamlined or waived to support faster recovery. Governor Newsom stressed the importance of removing barriers to ensure communities can rebuild efficiently.
“After the fires, rebuilding must happen without unnecessary hurdles. This order is a key step to help affected communities recover quickly and stronger,” Newsom explained.
The move underscores the state’s commitment to prioritizing swift recovery efforts while addressing the challenges posed by environmental regulations.
