A former NATO commander has issued a stark warning, suggesting that Russian President Vladimir Putin may not stop at Ukraine and could set his sights on other nations next. As the conflict in Ukraine persists, concerns are growing over Putin’s broader ambitions and the potential threat to neighboring countries.
Retired U.S. General Philip Breedlove, who previously served as NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, stated that Putin’s strategy involves expanding Russia’s influence and challenging Western alliances. He cautioned that Eastern European countries, particularly those with historical ties to the former Soviet Union, could be at risk.
Nations at Risk
Breedlove identified Moldova as a potential next target, given its weak military and political instability. Russia already maintains a military presence in the breakaway region of Transnistria, making Moldova vulnerable if Ukraine falls.
Georgia also remains in danger, especially considering its 2008 conflict with Russia, which led to Moscow’s occupation of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The country’s aspirations to join NATO could provoke further Russian interference.
Additionally, Breedlove warned that Russia could intensify hybrid warfare tactics against the Baltic states—Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania—using cyberattacks, disinformation, and political destabilization. Although these nations are NATO members, Putin may test the alliance’s commitment to collective defense under Article 5.
Western Allies Must Act
The former NATO commander stressed that Western nations must act decisively to deter further Russian aggression. “If Putin isn’t stopped in Ukraine, he will challenge us elsewhere,” he warned, calling for continued military aid to Ukraine and stronger NATO defenses in Eastern Europe.
In response, NATO has already bolstered its presence in the region, increasing troop deployments and military readiness. The U.S. and European allies have also imposed tough sanctions on Russia to weaken its economy and war efforts.
Putin’s Long-Term Goals
Experts suggest that Putin aims to restore Russian dominance over former Soviet territories while undermining Western unity. His claims of defending Russian-speaking populations in neighboring nations have served as justification for past military actions.
Despite sanctions and military challenges, Russia continues its geopolitical maneuvers. Intelligence reports indicate increased military activity near Moldova, fueling fears of further escalation if Ukraine resists for an extended period.
