A former Russian officer, using the pseudonym Anton, has disclosed alarming details about Russia’s nuclear readiness on the day it invaded Ukraine in February 2022. In an interview with the BBC, Anton revealed that a nuclear-armed military base was placed on maximum alert, with missiles loaded and combat-ready.
“We were prepared to launch forces into the sea and air and even execute a nuclear strike,” Anton stated. Drills were reportedly held prior to the invasion, but full readiness was initiated on the attack’s launch day.
Anton fled Russia with the help of deserters opposed to President Vladimir Putin’s orders. He emphasized that Russia’s nuclear threats during the war are credible, contrary to claims that the country’s missile systems are outdated. He also highlighted Russia’s powerful arsenal, including the Oreshnik missile, which was recently deployed in Ukraine, reportedly striking the city of Dnipro.
These revelations intensify fears over Moscow’s willingness to escalate nuclear tensions amid the ongoing conflict. Experts continue to assess the potential implications for global security.
