Bluesky, the social media platform favored by progressive users, encountered significant technical difficulties following a sudden influx of users departing Twitter. The mass migration occurred in response to Elon Musk’s appointment to former President Donald Trump’s cabinet.
Technical Challenges Amid Rapid Growth
The platform’s infrastructure struggled to manage the unexpected surge, with over two million new registrations within just 48 hours of Musk’s appointment announcement. Despite prior warnings about potential service disruptions, Bluesky’s technical team found themselves overwhelmed by the scale of new sign-ups.
A senior Bluesky developer, Samuel Newman, reported that they had to implement read-only mode to manage the technical strain. His colleague Paul Frazee addressed the situation with levity, suggesting users “grab a soda, pet the kitty” while they worked on resolving the issues.
Catalyst for Change
The mass departure from Twitter was primarily triggered by Musk’s new position as co-head of the Department of Government Efficiency in Trump’s administration. Alongside entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, Musk was tasked with leading an initiative to restructure the $6.5 trillion federal government, described by Trump as “the Manhattan Project of our time.”
The situation intensified following Vice President Kamala Harris’s concession in the 2024 election to Trump. Twitter experienced a record-breaking 115,000 account deactivations in a single day under Musk’s leadership.
Alternative Platforms Gain Momentum
While Bluesky grappled with server capacity issues, it achieved the top position in the iPhone App Store, outperforming competitors including Meta’s Threads, ChatGPT, and Google. Users have been drawn to Bluesky’s familiar interface, which reminds many of Twitter’s original design.
Meta’s Threads platform has also benefited from the exodus, recording 15 million new accounts this month. Both platforms have attracted users seeking alternatives to Twitter’s shifting political landscape. Notable organizations like The Guardian have publicly announced their departure from Twitter, citing concerns about platform toxicity and Musk’s controversial positions.

The surge in Bluesky’s popularity reflects growing user dissatisfaction with Musk’s Twitter management. Many progressive users have expressed concerns about perceived right-wing bias and platform manipulation for political purposes. Celebrity users like Lizzo have dubbed the mass platform switch “the great migration.”
