Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry has endorsed Manchester City’s Rodri for the upcoming 2024 Ballon d’Or award, overlooking Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior. During his CBS Sports appearance, Henry highlighted Rodri’s crucial role as Manchester City’s midfield anchor.
As the October 28 Ballon d’Or ceremony approaches, both Rodri and Vinicius Junior feature among the 30 candidates. Despite his recent injury setback, Rodri’s instrumental role in Spain’s European Championship victory strengthens his candidacy, according to Henry.
“Midfielders often don’t get the recognition they deserve. They’re the team’s core. While Rodri missed out on Champions League glory, he led Spain to Euro success,” Henry remarked.
Although Henry recognized Vinicius’ abilities, he noted the forward’s disappointing Copa America campaign. Nevertheless, Vinicius continues to shine for Real Madrid, recently netting three goals in their commanding 5-2 Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund.
Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti has publicly supported Vinicius’ Ballon d’Or bid, citing the Brazilian’s exceptional performances throughout the season.
While both contenders display impressive form, Henry maintains that Rodri’s midfield excellence gives him the edge in this prestigious competition.
