Contractors in Midland, Michigan made a startling discovery while examining the rooftop of a nearby grocery store, in an odd and unanticipated turn of events. A 34-year-old homeless lady with a computer, printer, and coffee machine was found nestled inside the building’s business sign, according to police reports.
The situation is confusing, according to Midland Police Department Officer Brennon Warren, who said, “It’s a story that makes you scratch your head, just somebody living up in a sign.” The lady, whose identity is being withheld, told investigators that she had been living under the Family Fare sign for about a year, even though she was employed elsewhere.
Located 130 miles north of Detroit, Midland is known for being the home of Dow Inc.’s worldwide headquarters and presents an environment of striking contrasts. Perched atop a shopping center, the Family Fare store is distinguished by a distinctive triangular sign at the top. Warren claims that this sign, which is about five feet broad and eight feet high, hides a secret door that is reachable from the rooftop.
Officials were shocked to discover evidence of a small living area within the temporary residence, which included a little desk, worn-out carpeting, and personal items similar to those in a regular home. Some of the equipment found inside were a computer, printer, and Keurig coffee maker—luxuries that didn’t seem right for a rooftop sign.
Amazingly, the woman had connected a power connection to an outlet on the roof in order to have energy, which allowed her to continue living a covert existence. But how she got to the rooftop is still a mystery since, as Officer Warren said, “I honestly don’t know how she was getting up there.”
A representative for Family Fare’s parent business, SpartanNash, responded to the unusual circumstances by expressing sympathy and stressing the urgent need for solutions to address homelessness and housing instability. Adrienne Chance emphasized the significance of teamwork in addressing the widespread problem of substandard housing across the country.
In spite of her unusual living situation, the woman complied with the authorities and voluntarily left the property when asked, avoiding prosecution. Officer Warren confirmed that before she left, the police gave her information regarding nearby support resources.
The woman’s inventiveness was appreciated by Saralyn Temple, director of Midland’s Open Door, a nonprofit group that helps those in need, but she also stressed the significance of tackling homelessness through legal and sustainable ways. “From someone who works with the homeless, part of me acknowledges she was really resourceful,” Temple said. Of course, we don’t want anyone turning to unlawful means in order to obtain housing. There are many superior choices.
The tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the complex issues surrounding homelessness and the urgent need for all-encompassing solutions to guarantee that everyone in society has access to secure and affordable housing.
