Ontario Premier Doug Ford has announced a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to 1.5 million Americans in response to President Donald Trump’s escalating trade war. The move, effective immediately, targets residents in Minnesota, New York, and Michigan, states reliant on Ontario’s power supply. Ford warned that if the U.S. further escalates trade tensions, Ontario could cut off electricity entirely.
At a press conference in Toronto, Ford expressed reluctance but emphasized the need to protect Ontario’s economy. “I feel terrible for the American people, who didn’t start this trade war. It’s one person who is responsible: President Trump,” he said. The new surcharge is expected to generate between C$300,000 and C$400,000 daily, funds earmarked to support Ontario workers and businesses impacted by U.S. tariffs.
This decision follows Trump’s recent imposition of tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, which sparked global market instability. Although Trump temporarily delayed tariffs on some Canadian goods, Ford dismissed the one-month reprieve as insufficient, calling it a source of uncertainty rather than resolution.
Ontario’s electricity surcharge adds to Canada’s broader retaliatory measures, including C$30 billion in tariffs on U.S. products like orange juice, peanut butter, and motorcycles. Ford estimated the hike would cost affected Americans an additional C$100 monthly, urging an end to the trade dispute. “Until these tariffs are off the table, Ontario will not relent,” he stated.
Ford also criticized Trump’s unpredictable policies, accusing him of undermining Canada’s economy. He claimed many Republicans privately oppose Trump’s trade tactics but fear speaking out. “It’s a shame, but we need to end this,” Ford added.
The escalating trade war has raised concerns about long-term economic fallout, with Ontario’s bold move signaling Canada’s readiness to defend its interests. As tensions mount, the impact on cross-border relations and everyday consumers remains a growing concern.
