Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has indicated a willingness to engage in talks with Russia but insists on meeting US President-elect Donald Trump first. Speaking during an interview with US podcaster Lex Fridman on Sunday, Zelensky outlined a clear sequence for pursuing peace negotiations.
“First with Trump, we agree with him on how to end the war, how to stop Putin,” Zelensky stated, emphasizing the importance of coordinating strategies with the United States. He also highlighted Europe’s crucial role, stating that having Europe’s voice in the negotiations is “very important.”
Zelensky expressed confidence in Trump’s ability to secure strong security guarantees from Europe, which he sees as a necessary step before engaging with Russia. “We will reach an agreement—I’m sure he’ll be able to offer strong security guarantees with Europe—and then we can talk to the Russians,” he added.
This approach signals a potential turning point in Ukraine’s handling of the conflict, with Zelensky prioritizing international alignment before initiating direct talks with Russia.
The outcomes of Zelensky’s proposed meeting with Trump could have significant implications for Ukraine’s strategy and the broader dynamics of the ongoing conflict.
