California’s San Francisco – The company X, once known as Twitter, is to shutter its long-standing San Francisco location and move its staff to other Bay Area locations. The New York Times reported on this development based on an email sent by CEO Linda Yaccarino. A few weeks prior, Elon Musk made hints about relocating X’s headquarters from California to Austin, Texas.
Yaccarino sent out an email to staff members notifying them that the San Francisco office will be closing in the “next few weeks.” She said that staff members will start working out of various “locations in San Jose” and a “shared engineering space in Palo Alto,” which is also utilized by xAI. Remarkably, there was no mention of moving to Texas in Yaccarino’s communication.
San Francisco and X have had a rocky relationship ever since Musk bought the firm. Musk forbade remote work shortly after becoming leadership in 2022 and ordered several staff members to report back to the mid-Market headquarters in San Francisco. The business allegedly turned office space into hotel rooms for staff members and put a massive flashing X on the building, which caused problems with the city’s Department of Building Inspection.
Additionally, The San Francisco Chronicle reported earlier this year about X’s landlord’s lawsuit against the firm for unpaid rent, which was eventually dropped. Musk had before promised to maintain the company’s headquarters in San Francisco in spite of these problems and his repeated critiques of the city’s authorities. Last year, Musk tweeted, “San Francisco, beautiful San Francisco, though others forsake you, we will always be your friend,” demonstrating his dedication to the city.
Still, indications of a possible shift have been present. The San Francisco Chronicle revealed in July that X’s landlord was attempting to rent a large portion of the 800,000 square foot corporate headquarters. This action suggested that X could be getting ready to depart the city.
The future of X’s headquarters is still up in the air as the company moves its employees to new facilities in the Bay Area. Requests for comments from the corporation about the most recent events were not immediately answered.
Another big development for X as it continues to grapple with its new identity and practical difficulties under Musk’s direction is the closing of its office. Employee migration inside the Bay Area implies a strategy change while keeping a presence in Silicon Valley, a center of technological innovation.
