A 15-year-old student involved in a fatal shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, was reportedly in contact with a 20-year-old man from Carlsbad, California, who was allegedly planning a mass shooting, sources say.
The shooter, identified as Natalie “Samantha” Rupnow, communicated with Alexander Paffendorf, who had been plotting an attack on a government building using firearms and explosives, according to FBI investigations.
Paffendorf was detained by the FBI and served with a restraining order under California’s gun red flag law, requiring him to surrender his firearms and ammunition due to concerns over his risk to himself and others. FBI agents discovered text messages revealing his discussions with Rupnow, although the specifics of his planned attack, including the target and timeline, remain unclear.
The Madison Police Department continues to investigate the Monday shooting, which left teacher Erin West, 42, and student Rubi Vergara, 14, dead from gunshot wounds. Rupnow died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Two firearms were recovered from the school, and authorities are examining Rupnow’s social media and personal connections for more insight into her actions prior to the attack. Investigators are asking the public for any relevant information to assist in the ongoing probe.
