Walmart Steps Up Efforts to Improve Sustainability and Cut Waste in the Fulfillment Network

Read Time:1 Minute, 52 Second

Walmart has announced new initiatives to reduce the amount of packaging waste related to online orders in an effort to further demonstrate its commitment to sustainability. The retail behemoth’s measures include shipping consolidation choices for eCommerce orders, switching from plastic to recyclable paper mailers, optimizing cardboard box packing, and phase-out of single-use plastic bags for online pickup orders.

These steps support Walmart’s overarching objective of developing an omnichannel fulfillment network that is more ecologically friendly.

Notably, by the end of the current fiscal year, Walmart hopes to have eliminated nearly 2,000 tons of plastic—65 million plastic bag mailers—by switching to recyclable paper bag mailers. Additionally, clients will soon be able to choose not to use single-use plastic bags for online pickup orders, as early testing shows encouraging acceptance rates.

The company’s commitment to sustainability was highlighted by Walmart U.S. Senior Vice President of Fulfillment Network Operations Karisa Sprague, who said, “Our commitment to regeneration is core to who we are and how we innovate at Walmart.”

Walmart is also using sophisticated AI algorithms to find ways to fulfill internet orders from shops as opposed to fulfillment facilities. By combining several orders onto a single delivery route and using electric vans for transportation, this method lowers the amount of packaging materials used as well as the distance traveled during transit. Walmart intends to reduce fleet emissions and expedite delivery times by using its extensive network of over 4,700 stores as fulfillment centers. This aligns with the company’s objective of attaining zero emissions by 2040.

Walmart U.S.’s Senior Vice President of End-to-End Delivery, Jennifer McKeehan, stressed the company’s capacity to significantly reduce emissions and waste by strategically utilizing its vast store network and last-mile delivery infrastructure.

Walmart is dedicated to investing in sustainable omnichannel capabilities in order to satisfy changing customer preferences and sustainably drive business growth, despite the company having a significant 27% rise in eCommerce. Walmart’s commitment to putting social and environmental concerns first and its progress towards being a more regenerative corporation are demonstrated by these sustainability projects.

The improvements that have been unveiled mark a critical turning point in Walmart’s technologically driven and environmentally based journey toward sustainability.
