The government of Vietnam announced on Saturday that Nguyen Phu Trong, the leader of the Vietnamese Communist Party, will have a public funeral the next week. He passed away on Friday. On July 25–26, the country will commemorate two days of mourning, with the state funeral happening on the second day.

According to a government statement, there will be no public entertainment during the mourning period, and flags at workplaces and other public locations will fly at half mast.

For thirteen years, Nguyen Phu Trong, who passed away at the age of eighty, was the most influential person in Vietnam. He conducted a protracted campaign against corruption, oversaw notable economic progress, and upheld a practical foreign policy during his time in office. His contributions had a significant impact on the political and economic climate of the nation today.

Following his death, President To Lam has been temporarily given his responsibilities. If Lam stays in both positions, he could be able to further solidify his position as a leading member of the party.

The party, the state, the Vietnamese people, and Trong’s family all suffered great losses as a result of his passing, according to the administration. “After nearly 60 years of work, Trong has made many great and especially outstanding contributions to the glorious revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation,” stated the statement.

Building ties with the US was part of Trong’s pragmatic approach to foreign policy, and this has been a key component of Vietnam’s global strategy. His efforts in this area have had a long-lasting effect on diplomatic ties between the two countries.

World leaders have expressed their condolences, highlighting Trong’s considerable influence on the international scene. According to a statement from the Communist Party of Vietnam, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and American President Joe Biden have all expressed their sympathies to the Vietnamese people and Trong’s family.

The commitment Nguyen Phu Trong made to the advancement and modernization of Vietnam will live on in his legacy. His leadership ushered in a time of profound transition, guiding the nation through significant transformations and leaving a lasting legacy on its history. As the country gets ready to say goodbye to a key figure, the state funeral will act as a somber reminder of his ongoing influence on Vietnam’s history.
