Max Verstappen has defended his aggressive driving style in Formula 1, dismissing criticism as coming from those who lack the “world champion mentality.” Reflecting on the intense 2024 season, the Dutchman emphasized his readiness to push boundaries in pursuit of success.
While Verstappen dominated the early part of the year, he faced stiff competition from McLaren’s Lando Norris and Ferrari in the latter stages. Heated battles in Austria, Austin, and Mexico City led to Verstappen receiving two 10-second penalties for forcing Norris off the track, drawing sharp criticism from fans, media, and rivals alike.
In a recent interview with Dutch F1 broadcaster Viaplay, Verstappen responded to comments from McLaren CEO Zak Brown, who had said, “Max is such an awesome racing driver, I just don’t think you need to drive like that.” Verstappen stood his ground, saying, “They don’t have the world champion mentality. I will always go to the limit to get the most out of every race. If I have to force it, that’s just how it goes. Sometimes you have to cross a line, and I do.”
The Dutch driver showed no remorse for his actions during the Mexico City Grand Prix, where he controversially edged Norris toward the wall. “No, not at all in that race,” he remarked. “I think I gained points there. To win a championship, you sometimes have to go to the limit or even exceed it. Not everyone understands that—not everyone has that mentality.”
Verstappen also criticized McLaren’s handling of their championship campaign, claiming their inexperience cost Norris the drivers’ title. “They had a very good car this year,” Verstappen explained, “but it’s clear they still have a lot to learn to compete consistently. They could have done much better in the drivers’ championship.”
He pointed to McLaren’s indecisive use of team orders as a significant factor in their missed opportunities. While the team excelled in the constructors’ standings, Verstappen noted their inability to capitalize fully on Norris’s potential.
Unapologetic and resolute, Verstappen underscored his belief that true champions must be willing to push boundaries, even if it invites controversy. His determination to achieve success at all costs has cemented his status as one of the most relentless drivers in Formula 1.
As the 2024 season concludes, Verstappen’s unyielding approach highlights the mindset he believes is essential for greatness, setting him apart from his critics.
