Updated iOS 18 Beta Reverses Modifications to Redesigned Photos App

Read Time:1 Minute, 55 Second

A few of Apple’s most recent improvements to the Photos app in iOS 18 are being reconsidered. With the release of the fifth developer beta on Monday, the tech giant made adjustments to certain features and eliminated others based on input from users. This new version is now available for developers to install.

The elimination of the Photos app’s Carousel function is the most noticeable modification. The Carousel displayed the user’s finest material in a swipeable row after using “on-device intelligence” to curate it. After receiving a lot of concerns from beta testers, the function that was formerly to the right of the photo grid has been removed.

Apple has modified the All Photos view to show more of the photo grid in addition to eliminating the Carousel. Recently Saved material is now included in the Recent Days collection as well. Additionally, the business has addressed another issue that testers frequently brought up: making it easier for users with numerous collections to locate albums.

Originally, the Photos app upgrade was touted as a major component of Apple’s 2024 software release. The app’s user experience was frequently complicated by seeming packed with extraneous features, even though it had a sleeker appearance and enhanced customization capabilities.

A July Reddit thread with over 1,000 upvotes brought these complaints to light. “Once again taking a rapid-use app and making it into an experience for no reason,” wrote one user, u/thiskillstheredditor. All I want is a camera roll and perhaps the option to organize images geographically. Before, it was quite alright, although a little swollen. However, this is a complete disaster.”

It remains to be seen if these latest changes will enhance the user experience enough. The modifications are anticipated to be included in the next release or very soon after, however they are not currently accessible in the public beta. Apple hopes to implement these changes prior to iOS 18’s formal autumn release.

User input is vital to Apple’s software development process as it continues to improve the program. The company’s dedication to delivering a user-friendly experience is evident in its readiness to reverse or modify features in response to this criticism. iOS 18’s impending public release will make clear if these modifications satisfy the demands and expectations of its sizable user base.
