The United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office has raised alarm over an increasing terrorist threat in Europe, primarily from the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), the Afghan affiliate of ISIS. Vladimir Voronkov, who heads the office, reports that ISKP is expanding its influence with support from Afghan and Central Asian diaspora networks.
Escalating conflicts in the Middle East, particularly between Hezbollah and Israel, have heightened concerns about potential terrorist activities across Europe. Recent events, such as the terrorism-related cancellation of Taylor Swift’s Vienna concert, illustrate the growing risk.
ISKP, known for the deadly 2021 Kabul airport attack, has been linked to plots or attacks targeting prominent European locations, including Cologne Cathedral and a Moscow concert venue. German security agencies have been warning about ISKP’s increasing capabilities for months.
While authorities continue to investigate possible connections between ISKP and the Vienna threat, the group’s danger remains clear. European nations are maintaining high vigilance in anticipation of potential attacks.
