UK Intensifies Pressure on Putin’s Network with Comprehensive Sanctions Package

The United Kingdom has unleashed an extensive sanctions campaign targeting Vladimir Putin’s close associates and Kremlin-connected organizations, coinciding with the third anniversary of Russia’s unprovoked Ukrainian invasion. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has emphasized that increasing economic pressure is essential to compel the Russian leader to make concessions.

The Foreign Office has announced 107 new sanctions, focusing on Russia’s shadow fleet, military suppliers in various countries including China, and prominent Russian oligarchs such as billionaire Roman Trotsenko, who amassed wealth through aviation and infrastructure enterprises. The measures also target North Korean officials allegedly sending troops to support Russian forces.

A key focus of these sanctions is disrupting Russia’s “shadow fleet” – vessels flying neutral flags but controlled by Kremlin-linked companies that help circumvent Western sanctions by transporting oil and goods. The UK is also blacklisting Kyrgyz bank OJSC Keremet and multiple companies in China, Turkey, and India that supply military components to Russia.

The Home Office has implemented additional travel bans on Kremlin-affiliated individuals, preventing Russian politicians and business executives from entering the UK, building upon existing restrictions against figures like Roman Abramovich.

Sir Keir is scheduled to visit Washington for discussions with US President Donald Trump, likely addressing Ukraine’s position in future peace negotiations and possibilities for enhanced Western support. The Prime Minister has called on G7 nations to implement stricter oil price caps and target Russian entities involved in sanction evasion, stressing the need for US security guarantees against future Russian aggression.

Sir Keir views President Trump’s approach as having “changed the global conversation” on Ukraine, presenting an opportunity for stronger international action. With French President Emmanuel Macron having already met with Trump ahead of Sir Keir’s visit, concerns remain about potential fractures in Western support for Kyiv. The UK maintains its commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and security, warning that inadequate action could encourage further Russian aggression.
