Trump, Vance Charged Over Discredited Pet-Eating Hoax

Read Time:1 Minute, 20 Second

Donald Trump and JD Vance are now facing legal action after the Haitian Bridge Alliance, a nonprofit based in California, filed charges against them for promoting a debunked pet-eating hoax in Springfield, Ohio. The baseless claim, which alleged that Haitian immigrants were stealing and eating pets, caused widespread panic in the city over the past month. The charges, filed under Ohio law, include disrupting public services, making false alarms, telecommunications harassment, and aggravated menacing.

The conspiracy began circulating in Republican circles in August but gained national attention after Trump repeated the claim during a debate against Vice President Kamala Harris. The false information led to bomb threats, school closures, and disruptions in city services, creating chaos in Springfield.

Subodh Chandra, lead attorney for the Haitian Bridge Alliance, stressed that Trump and Vance should be held accountable like anyone else who spreads harmful conspiracies. The legal team has requested that Clark County Municipal Court issue arrest warrants, which will require a court hearing before the charges can be dismissed.

In a further embarrassment for Vance, another aspect of the hoax unraveled when Miss Sassy, a pet allegedly stolen by Haitian immigrants, was found safe in its owner’s basement. Vance later admitted in a CNN interview that he had fabricated parts of the story to gain attention, but his actions have caused real damage to the community.

The legal proceedings now focus on whether Trump and Vance will face consequences for their role in spreading the conspiracy, which has stirred fear and disorder in Springfield. This case underscores the serious impact misinformation can have on local communities.
