Trudeau Vows “Forceful but Reasonable” Tariff Response

Read Time:1 Minute, 15 Second

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has declared that Canada’s response to potential U.S. tariffs will be “forceful but reasonable” if President Donald Trump follows through on his threat to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods. The Globe and Mail reported that Trudeau made the statement ahead of a meeting with his advisory council on Canada-U.S. relations on Friday.

Trump has repeatedly threatened to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico, potentially as early as this Saturday. On Thursday, he reiterated his stance, stating that tariffs are imminent but remained undecided on whether Canadian oil would be included.

Trudeau emphasized that such tariffs would not only harm Canada but also damage the U.S. economy and undermine the collective security of both nations. He highlighted Canada’s contributions to U.S. prosperity, including steel, aluminum, critical minerals, clean energy, and shared democratic values.

“If the president does choose to implement any tariffs against Canada, we’re ready with a response—a purposeful, forceful but reasonable, immediate response,” Trudeau stated. He added that Canada would continue advocating for the mutual benefits of trade, stressing the importance of their economic partnership.

Trudeau also warned that Canada would not relent until the tariffs are removed, stating, “Everything is on the table.” Meanwhile, Trump cited trade deficits as the primary reason for the tariffs, claiming, “We have very big deficits with those countries.”

As tensions rise, the potential for a trade dispute looms, with both nations preparing for significant economic and diplomatic repercussions.
