The catastrophe unfolded when approximately 40 people were on the gangway connecting the outer dock to the mainland. Over 20 individuals fell into the water, with seven losing their lives and eight requiring hospitalization. Three victims remain in critical condition. Notably, all casualties were visitors to the island.
Walter Rabon, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), revealed that the aluminum gangway was installed in 2021. He expressed surprise at the failure, given the typically low maintenance requirements of such structures. The investigation aims to uncover the cause of this unexpected collapse.
The incident took place during a significant cultural event for the Gullah-Geechee people, descendants of enslaved Africans who have preserved their unique heritage on the coastal islands.
