Threads Introduces Bluesky-Inspired Starter Packs

Read Time:1 Minute, 36 Second

Threads is rolling out a new feature inspired by Bluesky’s popular Starter Packs, intensifying the competition between the two platforms. Designed to help new users get started, Starter Packs are curated lists of accounts tailored to specific interests, making it easier to explore and engage with content.

TechCrunch recently revealed Threads’ take on this feature, showcased by hashtag creator Chris Messina. He shared a preview of the tool on Threads, even offering a way for users to try it out early. By entering a specific URL into Safari on iOS with the latest Threads app, users can access the feature and see it in action.

How Threads’ Version Works

Threads’ Starter Packs function similarly to Bluesky’s, featuring curated lists created by users around specific topics or interests. Messina highlighted one example, “NBA Threads,” illustrating the potential for diverse and personalized recommendations.

However, it’s unclear if Threads will allow Starter Packs to be shared directly in feeds, a popular aspect of Bluesky’s version. Bluesky responded to the announcement with humor, posting on Threads that users should consider joining Bluesky if the app continues to mimic its features.

Social Media Rivals in a Heated Race

Threads’ move to replicate Bluesky’s features highlights the fierce competition among platforms vying to replace X (formerly Twitter). Bluesky has recently surged in popularity, surpassing 20 million users, as people look for alternatives to X. Meanwhile, Threads, backed by Meta, reported over 35 million signups in November alone, giving it a significant edge.

The rivalry mirrors past tech battles, like Sega versus Nintendo, where competition drove rapid innovation. With Threads incorporating elements of Bluesky’s success, it hopes to attract and retain a growing user base.

As the two platforms continue to compete, users stand to benefit from their drive to outpace each other, ensuring a steady stream of new features and improvements in the ever-evolving social media landscape.
