The Ideal AC Temperature Settings for a Summer Heat Wave

Read Time:2 Minute, 10 Second

The U.S. is experiencing extreme heat, and air conditioners have been running nonstop to help people stay cool and survive. But in a heat wave, what is the ideal temperature to set? What steps can you take to ensure that your living area remains cool throughout the warm months?

Suggested Temperature Ranges
The Department of Energy advises adjusting your thermostat to a comfortable temperature that allows you to regulate the humidity. They stress that your cooling expense will be reduced the less the difference in temperature between interior and outdoor spaces.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Energy Star program advises setting air conditioners to 78 degrees Fahrenheit when you’re at home and awake for the best comfort and energy efficiency. This configuration achieves a balance between energy efficiency and comfort.

Many people, though, choose colder environments. According to a 2021 Consumer Reports poll, people who have central air conditioning usually set their thermostats to a median setting of 72 degrees, which is far lower than the suggested 72 degrees for energy efficiency. Not a single survey participant chose a temperature higher than 76 degrees.

Adapting for Various Hours of the Day
When sleeping, Energy Star recommends 4 degrees warmer temperature and when traveling, 7 degrees warmer temperature. One useful tool for efficiently controlling these temperatures is a programmed thermostat. Installing your thermostat away from sources of direct hot or cold air, such an air conditioner or a window that receives sunlight, will enhance its efficiency.

While away, should you turn off your air conditioner?
When you’re gone for brief periods of time, it’s more economical to raise the temperature rather than lower it. Turning off the system can save more money for longer absences, such a week or longer.

Other Cooling Techniques
There are various methods to control your AC costs and keep your house cooler:

  • Install window curtains: Heated windows can be significantly insulated from the outside air by curtains.
  • Limit Appliances That Produce Heat: Use equipment with lower temperatures, such as dryers and ovens, during the day.
  • Verify Weather Stripping: To stop cool air from escaping, make sure windows and doors are well sealed.
  • Install ceiling fans: While they can aid in air circulation, fans shouldn’t be used as your only source of cooling. They offer ventilation that may give the impression of increased comfort without really lowering body temperature or averting heat-related illnesses.

According to EPA data, air conditioning is consuming more energy. The number of hot days rises with climate change, increasing the demand for efficient cooling systems.
