The $1.9 billion New Baltimore Bridge Span won’t be completed until 2028.

Following a collision with a container ship in March, Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key bridge collapsed, leaving the port in disorder. Plans to rebuild the destroyed bridge now show an enormous cost.

The bridge will need to be replaced quickly, but the Maryland Department of Transportation estimates that it would cost between $1.7 and $1.9 billion. The financial burden is anticipated to fall primarily on state and federal governments.

The new bridge is expected to be finished by fall 2028, according to a representative for the Maryland Department of Transportation named David Broughton. The exact cost will depend on how comprehensive the engineering drawings get.
