A mother is mourning the loss of her unborn child following a sad occurrence that occurred in Palestine, Texas, leaving the neighborhood in shock. On July 3, Casi Hughes, who was eight months pregnant, was hit by a hit-and-run driver as she was on her way home from a fireworks display.

Hughes told FOX 4 about the terrifying incident, adding, “I turned to my left and there was a car. Suddenly, somebody screamed watch out. I also recall attempting to leap out of the path. I’m curious as to why they continued.

She discovered the heartbreaking reality while Hughes was being transported to a hospital by air. “You guys must have the child. You guys must take the baby. “You guys need to cut me open and get the baby,” she remembered sobbing as she spoke to emergency personnel. “That entire voyage, all I could think about was the expression on the flight mate’s face as he searched for the heartbeat. It seemed like he wouldn’t even look at me when I kept asking him if he could find it or if he heard anything at all. I simply knew he was gone as soon as I saw him.”

Police said the suspect was operating a silver or white passenger car. Although they are still looking for video evidence of the incident, they have not yet been able to identify any suspects.

Hughes is recuperating from a number of wounds, including fractures to her left leg, back, face, and pelvis. She also has a 13-year-old son and a 20-year-old stepdaughter. She said, “I’ve just been taking it day by day,” to FOX 4. “Someone has information. How do they get their rest at night?

The town continues to be in a state of grief and rage as they support Hughes during this trying period. The local authorities are still looking for any leads that could provide more information about the horrific event as they work to bring the offender to justice.
