During their meeting in Taipei on Sunday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Taiwan’s Minister of Economic Affairs Kuo Jyh-huei signed a substantial declaration of intent on economic cooperation. With an emphasis on cooperation in vital sectors including semiconductors, energy, and the production of electric vehicles, this historic agreement ushers in a new era in Texas-Taiwan ties.
“We understand, both in Texas and in the United States, the importance of a strong Taiwan for the future of the entire globe,” Governor Abbott said, emphasising the significance of this alliance. Abbott stated that Texas will establish a representative office in Taiwan, its first foreign location outside of Mexico this century, in an effort to deepen connections.
Abbott had a meeting with Taiwan President Lai Ching-te earlier that day. Taiwan contributed more than $5 billion to Texas in 2022, making it the top source of foreign direct investment, according to the governor’s office. Furthermore, Taiwan was Texas’s seventh-largest commercial partner in the previous year. Since Lai took office in May, Abbott is the first official US state governor to visit Taiwan, making his visit noteworthy historically.
Taiwan and China are experiencing more tensions at the time of Abbott’s visit. Beijing, which views Taiwan’s new leader as a supporter of the US-backed island’s independence, has escalated its pressure on him. Beijing has flown 72 military aircraft into the Air Defence Identification Zone of Taiwan over the course of the last three days, crossing the Taiwan Strait’s middle line. Following Lai’s inauguration, China held its largest-scale military exercises in a year in May, encircling the island for two days with 111 Chinese planes and several navy vessels.
On the Taiwan part of the trip, Abbott is accompanied by legislators from Texas on an economic development mission. The governor is anticipated to go to South Korea and Japan after his visit to Taiwan in order to deepen Texas’s commercial ties with other countries. Texas is positioned as a major participant in international commerce and collaboration as a result of this visit, which highlights the state’s dedication to developing global economic relations.
