Taiwan Calls China ‘Hostile,’ Tightens Security

Read Time:52 Second

Taiwan’s President William Lai Ching-te has labeled China a “hostile foreign force” while introducing stricter national security measures to combat espionage and foreign influence.

In a speech on Thursday, Lai announced the revival of military courts to prosecute offenses like spying, sedition, and aiding the enemy. He also revealed plans to tighten residency rules for individuals from China, Hong Kong, and Macau.

These measures come in response to recent Chinese espionage cases, including a retired Taiwanese air force major leaking classified information for money. Additionally, Taiwan deported the Chinese wife of a citizen for repeatedly posting pro-Beijing content online.

Beijing swiftly denounced Lai, calling him a “creator of crisis” and a threat to cross-Straits stability. While China views Taiwan as its territory, Taipei asserts its independence.

Taiwan is bolstering its defenses with advanced missiles, US-supplied tanks and aircraft, and domestically built submarines. It has also extended mandatory military service from four months to one year.

Amid escalating tensions, Taiwan remains focused on safeguarding its sovereignty and national security.
