T-Mobile Offers Free Starlink Satellite Texting Until July

Read Time:1 Minute, 9 Second

T-Mobile has launched its Starlink satellite texting feature in beta, offering it for free until July 2024. Available to anyone in the U.S. with a compatible iPhone or Android device, the service aims to provide connectivity in areas without traditional cell coverage.

Announced during a Super Bowl ad, the feature allows users to send text messages via Starlink’s second-gen satellites, even in remote locations. Compatible devices include the iPhone 14 series and later, Google Pixel 9 models, Samsung Galaxy S21 and newer, and select foldable devices.

While the beta is free, spots are limited. Post-July, T-Mobile’s Go5G Next plan subscribers will get the feature at no extra cost. Other T-Mobile customers can add it for $15/month ($10/month if signed up by February 29). Non-T-Mobile users will pay $20/month starting July.

This initiative stems from T-Mobile’s 2023 partnership with SpaceX, aiming to enhance connectivity in underserved areas. The service currently supports texting, with voice and data capabilities expected later.

In January 2024, T-Mobile and Starlink successfully sent the first satellite-based texts. The FCC later approved the feature for emergency use in disaster-stricken areas. Now, the beta is open to all eligible users, though early sign-ups are encouraged due to limited availability.
