As part of its latest change to its immigration policy, Sweden said it would pay refugees up to USD 34,000 to leave the country on their own. The plan was made public on Thursday by the right-wing government, which is backed by the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats.

From 2026 on, refugees who go back to their home countries could get up to 350,000 Swedish kronor ($34,000). Sweden has long been known as a “humanitarian superpower” for its willingness to take in refugees and asylum seekers. This move is a big change for the country. But the country has had trouble absorbing many arrivals in the last few years.

“Our migration policy is going through a major shift,” said Johan Forssell, the minister in charge of migration.

Smaller payouts of up to 10,000 kronor per adult and 5,000 kronor per child are available to refugees right now. The most a family can get is 40,000 kronor.
