Staff at Translink to Take Further Industrial Action, Ceasing Public Transport in Northern Ireland on Four Important Dates

Four significant dates next month will see delays to Northern Ireland’s public transport system as part of the ongoing industrial dispute. Train and bus services will be suspended on February 1st, 15th, 27th, and 28th due to strike action announced by the GMB, Siptu, and Unite unions.

The three unions’ representatives convened last Friday to decide how to proceed with their campaign to end the protracted wage dispute. Public transport services, including those provided by buses, trains and gliders, are affected by the strike, which includes all bus and rail drivers, engineers, signal workers and conciliation officials.

This comes after a string of strikes in December that caused severe disruptions throughout the region on the 1st, 15th, 16th, and 22nd. The unions have promised to keep up their strike action until a solution is found and are pushing for an increase in cost-of-living compensation.

Last Thursday, there was a widespread day of strike action by public sector employees, including those who work in public transportation, to seek pay parity. A total of 170,000 employees from the public transportation, health, education, and civil service sectors took part in the one-day strike, threatening to take additional action if their demands for compensation were not met.

The eight-day strike by education support staff, which consists of about 800 Unite employees who work for the Education Authority, is still going strong and is seriously disrupting the school system. There are several roles involved in this continuing effort, such as teaching helpers, administrators, caterers, cleaners, and drivers of school buses.

About 200 civil servants from the Unite and GMB unions who work in the road and forestry services are also taking part in the ongoing strike by declining to provide gritting services until January 24. The Department of Infrastructure promises to give priority to important occurrences throughout the strike action and warns of further inconvenience until better weather arrives.
