Spanish President Pedro Sánchez has urged European Union nations to stand united in support of countries threatened by Russia, emphasizing the need to protect the multilateral order. Speaking at a PSOE party event, Sánchez warned that Russia’s actions in Ukraine threaten global stability and the principles of the UN Charter.
“What is at stake is not just a war or an invasion. The multilateral order is at risk,” Sánchez stated. He stressed the importance of achieving a “just and lasting” peace in Ukraine, but cautioned against rewarding aggression, which could lead to further conflicts.
Sánchez also highlighted Ukraine’s aspirations to join the EU, asserting that Russia must respect Ukraine’s sovereignty. While acknowledging Spain’s differing security challenges compared to Eastern European nations, he pledged solidarity with countries like Finland and the Baltic states, which face direct threats from Russia.
“They need our solidarity and demand that we collectively strengthen our security to deter Russia,” Sánchez said, reaffirming Spain’s commitment to the EU both out of interest and conviction. His remarks underscore the growing urgency for European unity in the face of escalating geopolitical tensions.
