South Africa Declines Aid for Trapped Illegal Miners

Read Time:40 Second

The South African government has refused to provide assistance to around 4,000 illegal miners trapped in a closed mine in Stilfontein, North West province. The decision reflects the government’s firm stance against illegal mining activities.

Authorities have blocked the entrances to the mineshaft as part of “Vala Umgodi” (Close the Hole) operation, preventing the transport of food, water, and other essentials to the miners underground. This strategy aims to force the miners to surface and face arrest.

Reports indicate that over 1,000 miners have already emerged from the region’s abandoned mines, many appearing exhausted, dehydrated, and unwell after weeks without sufficient supplies. Despite growing concerns for the miners’ safety and health, the government maintains that aiding illegal miners could encourage more unlawful activities in the area, posing broader security and economic risks.
