Snow Hits North and Scotland Tonight, Warmer Days Ahead

Read Time:1 Minute, 36 Second

Snow is set to sweep across Scotland and northern England tonight, with up to 20cm expected in higher areas, according to the Met Office. The wintry conditions follow snowfall in East Anglia over the weekend, where Norfolk saw 2cm and Suffolk recorded 1cm.

Meteorologist Ellie Glaisyer confirmed that parts of Scotland above 100m could see 1cm to 3cm of snow, with higher areas above 300m potentially receiving up to 20cm. Similar conditions are expected in northern England from Monday into Tuesday. However, a significant shift is on the horizon, with temperatures predicted to rise to 13C or 14C by midweek, bringing sunshine to many regions.

This warming trend marks a stark contrast to the recent “anticyclonic gloom” that has plagued much of the UK, with dull skies and limited sunshine over the past fortnight. Met Office meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey noted that while the upcoming temperatures are above February’s average—6C in Scotland and 9C in southern England—they are unlikely to break records. The highest February temperature, 21.2C, was recorded in Kew Gardens in 2019.

Western areas are expected to experience rain during the week, while eastern regions will remain drier. Despite the milder conditions, some areas could go 10 days without sunshine, a phenomenon described as “near record-breaking” by meteorologist Tom Morgan.

Morgan explained that the recent cold spell resulted from a high-pressure system over Scandinavia, bringing chilly winds and moisture from the Baltic and North Seas. This created persistent cloud cover, blocking sunlight across the UK. However, Atlantic air is gradually pushing the cold air eastward, with milder conditions expected nationwide by midweek.

As snow blankets parts of the north and Scotland tonight, residents are advised to prepare for icy conditions. Meanwhile, the promise of warmer days ahead offers a welcome respite after weeks of gloomy weather.
