A UAE-based shipping firm has filed a legal challenge seeking the release of its vessel, the Eagle S, which Finnish authorities detained over alleged submarine cable damage. Caravella LLC FZ has approached Helsinki’s courts, claiming Finland lacks proper grounds for holding the ship.
The vessel came under scrutiny after Finnish officials claimed it damaged multiple undersea cables in the Baltic Sea on Christmas Day 2023. Investigators believe the ship’s anchor severed both the Estlink 2 power connection and four telecommunications lines. The situation escalated when authorities boarded the tanker and directed it to port.
The incident occurs amid increased vigilance over Baltic infrastructure security following Russia’s Ukraine invasion, prompting NATO to strengthen its regional defense posture.
The company’s legal representative, Herman Ljungberg, criticized Finnish authorities’ handling of the situation, alleging improper treatment of crew members during questioning. Finnish law enforcement maintains they followed proper procedures throughout the investigation.
Adding to the complexity, the Eagle S is believed to be operating within a network of vessels that helps bypass Russian oil sanctions. While Finnish customs officials have seized the ship’s cargo, it remains stored onboard.
The dispute highlights the growing challenges of maritime law enforcement in the Baltic region as geopolitical tensions persist.
