Chennai, India — November 30, 2024

Cyclone Fengal has brought heavy, continuous rainfall to Chennai, leading to severe flooding and major traffic disruptions ahead of its expected landfall along Tamil Nadu’s coast later this evening. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for southern states, warning of heavy rainfall and urging residents to remain cautious.

The relentless downpour has caused waterlogging at 134 locations across Chennai, with roads, including highways, submerged, making it difficult for vehicles and commuters to navigate. In response, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has deployed 1,686 pumps to clear standing water, including 137 high-capacity pumps and 484 tractor-mounted units.

To assist affected residents, the GCC has set up 329 relief centers offering essential supplies such as food, water, and shelter. A team of 22,000 personnel and 18,500 volunteers is also on standby to provide emergency support and conduct rescue operations.

With Cyclone Fengal’s landfall imminent, authorities have urged residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. The situation remains critical, and local agencies are working relentlessly to manage the flooding and provide immediate relief.
