In a momentous occasion, Second Lieutenant Madison Marsh of the United States Air Force, who is presently enrolled in Harvard University’s master’s programme, has emerged as the first Air Force officer serving on active service to win the esteemed Miss America title for 2024.
With a degree in physics from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 2023, Marsh previously won the title of Miss Colorado in 2023. On Sunday night, she represented her home state on the national stage, an unparalleled accomplishment in the pageant’s history.
Marsh is a graduate intern at Harvard Medical School, demonstrating her intellectual interests outside of the military. Her area of interest is applying artificial intelligence to the early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, a cause close to her heart. In honour of her mother Whitney Marsh, who passed away tragically from pancreatic cancer in 2018, Marsh founded the Whitney Marsh Foundation. Since then, the organisation has raised more than a quarter of a million dollars to fund research into pancreatic cancer.
Marsh, a recipient of the esteemed Truman Scholarship, is currently pursuing a master’s degree in public policy at Harvard’s Kennedy School, demonstrating her dedication to community impact and military duty.
Marsh recently discussed her commitment to having a good influence on the Air Force and beyond in an interview at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. She highlighted the value of using her position as Miss America to further community well-being by referencing her experiences in leadership, public speaking, and social impact projects.
In her post-victory reflections, Marsh talked about the bizarre experience she had and emphasised how the principles of Miss America and her military service coincided. She urged individuals to follow their passions and not set boundaries for themselves, emphasising the chance to lead both within and outside of uniform.
