The war between Russia and Ukraine has been going on for 939 days, and important military, political, and international events are still happening. Here are the most recent events:
Fighting and Deaths
- Four people were hurt when a Russian missile hit the Ukrainian port city of Odessa. Governor Oleh Kiper said that the attack also hurt some port buildings and a passenger ship flying the flag of Antigua.
- In 13 different areas, Ukraine’s air force said it had shot down 61 out of 70 Russian drones and one out of every four missiles. This means that Russia is still attacking from the air, but Ukraine has a strong defence.
- About 70,112 Russian forces are thought to have died since the full-scale attack began in February 2022, according to the BBC and Mediazona. Experts think the real number is much higher than this one, which comes from public sources.
- Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for the Kremlin, talked about worries about the Kurdish region, which Ukraine recently attacked. He said Russia would take back power “in due time,” but he didn’t say when.
It’s all about politics and diplomacy.
- In a big move, Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council said that the chat app Telegram couldn’t be used on government computers because of worries about Russian spying.
- EU President Ursula von der Leyen promised during her trip to Kyiv that the EU would give Ukraine €35 billion ($39 billion), backed by frozen Russian assets, to help the country get through its third winter of war.
- Four Russian troops in occupied Ukraine were charged with torturing and killing Russell Bentley, a 64-year-old US resident who supported Russia. Bentley’s wife thinks that Russian soldiers took him hostage and killed him.
- Norway said it would give Ukraine an extra 5 billion kroner ($475 million) in aid this year, and the help will continue until 2030.
- Vladimir Kara-Murza, a famous Russian opposition leader who was freed earlier this year in a prisoner swap, said that Putin cannot win the war in Ukraine, stressing how important it is for people all over the world to stand together and fight back.
Weapons and Military Support
- The US is getting ready to send Ukraine a $375 million military help package. The package comes with “patrol boats,” “extra ammunition for HIMARS,” and “artillery rounds.” This help is very important for Ukraine’s current defence measures.
- Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said that Italy is giving Ukraine another Samp-T antimissile system to protect important buildings like hospitals, schools, and colleges.
- Former President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine needed to make more weapons at home after an emotional meeting with top officials. As the war goes on, this change is meant to make Ukraine’s defence stronger.
As the 939th day of the war comes to a close, Ukraine is still being attacked, but with help from other countries, it is putting up a strong defence. It’s shocking how many people have died, especially among Russian troops, and the political stakes are still high as more countries get engaged.
