Following Ukraine’s claim of executing its “largest” airstrike on Russian territory, Russia responded with a massive assault early Wednesday, January 15, targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with nearly 120 ballistic missiles and drones.
The Russian military confirmed the operation, stating, “This morning, we launched a coordinated attack using high-precision weapons on critical gas and energy facilities supporting Ukraine’s military-industrial complex.” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticized the strikes, saying, “In the heart of winter, their target remains our energy sector.”
Reports from the Ukrainian Air Force indicated that Russia launched 43 ballistic and cruise missiles, along with 74 combat drones. In Lviv, critical infrastructure in the Drogobysh and Stryi districts was hit, while Ivano-Frankivsk faced attacks on key energy sites. Although no casualties were reported, emergency power outages affected seven regions.
Ukraine’s air defense claimed success, intercepting 47 drones and 30 missiles. The escalation highlights the intensifying conflict, as both sides amplify their military efforts.
