The discussion between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping covered several crucial topics, including Taiwan, Ukraine, and relations with the United States.
The conversation, marked by warm personal rapport with mutual references as “dear friends,” emphasized both nations’ dedication to protecting their respective national interests. China’s foreign ministry emphasized Xi’s push for enhanced strategic partnership and bilateral support.
Their relationship, which was characterized as a “no limits” partnership in 2022, has evolved through increased military cooperation and substantial trade growth. Analysts view this alliance as reaching unprecedented levels of collaboration, reflecting aligned strategic and economic objectives.
The timing of their discussion, coinciding with the presidential transition in Washington, drew international interest. According to Putin’s advisor Yury Ushakov, the call’s scheduling predated the inauguration. Both leaders expressed willingness to maintain productive dialogue with the United States, provided there was mutual respect.
The new administration’s approach introduces fresh dynamics to international relations, with proposed economic measures against China and potential sanctions on Russia regarding Ukraine. The administration has criticized China’s role in the Ukraine conflict, suggesting Beijing could do more to facilitate peace negotiations.
The Taiwan issue emerged as a key topic, with Putin affirming Russia’s support for China’s position. Xi acknowledged this backing of Beijing’s stance on Taiwan, although international disagreements persist on this matter.
