Red Bull Denies Car Changes for Miami GP

Red Bull Racing has refuted claims that they made significant adjustments to their car ahead of the 2024 Miami Grand Prix. Technical director Pierre Wache clarified that the team’s setup remained unchanged, suggesting instead that rival teams, particularly McLaren, made notable advancements that shifted the competitive balance.

Lando Norris secured an unexpected win in Miami, aided by a timely safety car intervention, while Red Bull’s Max Verstappen—who had dominated in Japan and China—finished second. McLaren’s enhanced MCL38 performance catapulted them into contention, prompting questions about Red Bull’s apparent performance dip.

No Changes, Just Rival Progress

Addressing the speculation, Wache reiterated that Red Bull’s car setup and design remained consistent.

“We didn’t make any changes to the car or how we set it up,” Wache told Autosport. “It seems like the other teams made substantial progress rather than us falling back.”

While Red Bull’s race pace was competitive, McLaren’s ability to reduce tire degradation and optimize their car’s performance was pivotal.

“We should have won in Miami, but McLaren hit the sweet spot. Their package worked exceptionally well, with less tire degradation and improved updates,” he added.

Asymmetric Braking Controversy Addressed

Mid-season, the FIA clarified regulations banning asymmetric braking systems, which led to speculation that Red Bull had previously used such a system, potentially explaining their dip in form.

Wache firmly dismissed these allegations, stating, “We made no changes to the car, and nothing in our setup could account for a drop in performance. The claims about the braking system are unfounded.”

The FIA also supported Red Bull, denying any link between the rule clarification and their Miami performance.

McLaren’s Rapid Improvement

Wache admitted that Red Bull had not anticipated McLaren’s sudden rise. “Their updates weren’t dramatic, but their car came together in a way that surprised us. It was a significant leap forward,” he said.

Despite mounting speculation and scrutiny, Wache maintained that Red Bull’s internal focus remained unchanged.

“The pressure to deliver the best car every weekend is already immense. Speculation doesn’t change how we approach things,” he explained.
