Two unusual tornadoes were observed in England on Friday, with meteorologists cautioning about impending storms and heavy precipitation. A dramatic dark cloud and powerful gusts were captured on video in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, showcasing nature’s intensity.
In Aldershot, Hampshire, a more destructive tornado caused property and tree damage along a 1.2-mile path. The Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO) classified it as a T1 or T2 event, indicating light to moderate severity. Despite the chaos, no injuries were reported. Local authorities and community members quickly mobilized to secure affected areas and assist with cleanup efforts.
Hours later, a second tornado was spotted in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. Although brief, lasting about 20 seconds, it left a lasting impression on witnesses. While tornadoes are uncommon in the UK, the Met Office reports an average of 30 annually, typically milder than those in other regions.
The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms and heavy showers across much of southern England, Wales, the Midlands, and parts of northern England through Sunday. Up to 70mm of rain is predicted in some areas within hours, potentially causing flooding and transport disruptions.
Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Dan Harris warned that unsettled weather may persist into next week, with additional warnings possible for Monday, particularly in southern UK regions. This stormy period follows a recent warm spell that saw temperatures reach 25°C in parts of the country.
As the UK prepares for more turbulent weather, residents are advised to stay informed through Met Office updates and take necessary precautions. These rare tornadoes serve as a reminder of nature’s unpredictability and the importance of vigilance during severe weather events.
