Ralf Rangnick Says Again That Manchester United Had a “Open Heart Operation”

Austria’s new head coach, Ralf Rangnick, has brought up the famous “open heart operation” quip he made about Manchester United while serving as the club’s caretaker manager from 2021 to 2022. Many people agreed with Rangnick’s assessment of how bad things were at the club, and his most recent words back up that view.

Rangnick took over United for a short time after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was fired, and he oversaw a rough time. After seven months, the team’s achievements were not very good, which was upsetting. Rangnick famously said that United needed a “operation of the heart” to fix problems that went back a long time in the club. People at the time thought that what he said was extremely honest, and a lot of friends and experts agreed with him.

Rangnick recently went over what he said again, before Austria’s UEFA Nations League game against Norway. He said, “I probably said that when the season was almost over two years ago…” I was right in what I thought, Erik ten Hag told me. It looks like I was right. I don’t know how many players they’ve signed since then. This was a clear nod to Erik ten Hag, who is now the boss of United and agreed with Rangnick’s opinion in a recent interview.

Even though Ten Hag has won two trophies, Manchester United has continued to have problems. They had their worst Premier League season in 2023–24, and they’ve had a rough start to this season, including a crushing 3-0 loss at home to Liverpool.

Even United great Dwight Yorke has called for a change, saying that Zinedine Zidane should take over for Ten Hag because United isn’t playing well lately. Yorke thinks that Zidane’s fame would help him get top players, which the Dutchman has had trouble with despite winning two titles.

Rangnick’s comment about a “open heart operation” is still valid now that Sir Jim Ratcliffe is in charge of football operations at United and a big squad overhaul is under way. Rangenick and Ten Hag both agree that Old Trafford has a lot of troubles.
