Putin Offers Life Guarantee to Ukrainian Soldiers in Kursk if They Surrender

Read Time:1 Minute, 2 Second

Russian President Vladimir Putin has pledged to spare the lives of Ukrainian soldiers in the Kursk region if they surrender and withdraw. This announcement follows US President Donald Trump’s appeal to protect soldiers trapped by Russian forces. Putin emphasized that Ukraine’s military leadership must issue a formal order for troops to lay down their arms, ensuring their safety and humane treatment under international and Russian law.

This marks a shift from Putin’s earlier stance, where he labeled captured Ukrainian soldiers as “terrorists.” His latest remarks came during a visit to Kursk, his first since Ukraine’s surprise offensive in August 2023. However, reports from Ukrainian activists allege that Russian forces have executed Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) in the region, with at least five deaths reported recently.

Putin also accused Ukrainian soldiers of committing crimes against civilians, labeling their actions as terrorism. Meanwhile, Russian forces, supported by North Korean troops, are advancing to reclaim territory in Kursk, posing a significant challenge for Ukraine.

This development highlights the escalating tensions in the region, with Putin’s offer raising questions about its sincerity amid ongoing allegations of war crimes. The situation remains critical as international observers monitor the conflict’s humanitarian and geopolitical implications.
