As he celebrated the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War Two on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a harsh warning, charging that the West was fostering a possible world war. Putin’s speech emphasised Russia’s resolve to uphold its standing as a significant nuclear power and defend its interests in the face of rising tensions with the West and Ukraine.
Amid an unusual May snowstorm, Putin criticised the West for its “arrogant” disdain for Russia’s crucial role in defeating Nazi Germany during a ceremony on Red Square. He charged that Western elites were stoking hostilities across the globe and cautioned against underestimating Russia’s determination to avert a devastating confrontation.
Putin stated, “Our strategic forces are always in a state of combat readiness,” highlighting Russia’s readiness to defend itself against any perceived threats.
Putin’s comments coincide with a period of increased hostilities between the West and Russia, mainly because of the current crisis in Ukraine. The situation has remained unstable since Russia’s entrance into Ukrainian territory in 2022, with both sides accusing the other of aggression and territorial aspirations.
While Putin portrays the conflict as a fight against Western incursions into his perceived sphere of influence, Ukraine and its friends in the West consider Russia’s activities as an imperialist land grab and a breach of international law.
As Putin reminds the world of the sacrifices made by the Soviet Union during World War Two, Victory Day is a very important day for Russia. He emphasised the significance of major conflicts and the tremendous human cost borne by the Soviet people, underscoring Russia’s indispensable part in achieving triumph over Nazi Germany.

Given that Putin has warned repeatedly about the possibility of a nuclear exchange, the growing situation in Ukraine has sparked worries about the possibility of a wider fight. Tensions have increased as a result of recent events, such as the United States providing Ukraine with large military assistance and aggressive remarks made by Western officials.
Russia signalled its preparedness to escalate if required by announcing plans to conduct military drills involving the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons in response to perceived threats from Western nations.
