Putin Alarmed by Coup Fears in Abkhazia

Read Time:57 Second

Russian President Vladimir Putin is reportedly on edge as tensions escalate in Abkhazia, a breakaway region of Georgia occupied by Russia since 2008. Protests erupted in Sokhumi, the region’s capital, on November 12, with demonstrators storming the local parliament to oppose a controversial law promoting Russian investments.

The legislation, seen by many as enabling Russian colonization through land and property purchases, sparked outrage among locals. Protesters forced the suspension of parliamentary debates, demanded government resignations, and heightened unrest in the Kremlin-controlled territory.

In response to mounting pressure, Abkhazian President Aslan Bzhania announced the withdrawal of the proposed law. However, the protests have raised alarms in Moscow, with Putin reportedly concerned that the turmoil could lead to a coup.

Abkhazia, home to Russian military bases, is a critical strategic outpost for the Kremlin. The growing dissatisfaction with Moscow’s influence poses a significant challenge to Russia’s hold over the region and may signal broader instability in other occupied territories.

As tensions remain high, the situation could have far-reaching consequences for Putin’s control in the region and Russia’s geopolitical ambitions amid rising local and international challenges.
