On October 7, 2024, numerous Belgian government and municipal websites experienced significant disruptions due to a large-scale cyberattack. The pro-Russian hacking group NoName057 claimed responsibility for the Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) assaults, which rendered many online services across various cities and provinces inaccessible.
The Centre for Cybersecurity Belgium (CCB) verified the attack’s source and cautioned about potential future incidents. It’s believed the hackers’ actions were in retaliation to Belgium’s recent acquisition of three French Caesar cannons intended for Ukraine’s support. The website of the Belgian House of Representatives was among the affected targets, indicating the attack’s political motivations.
Belgian officials are currently engaged in efforts to minimize the impact and forestall additional disruptions to their digital infrastructure.
