Pope Francis Off Ventilator, Condition Stabilises: Vatican

Read Time:1 Minute, 45 Second

The Vatican has announced that Pope Francis, 88, is no longer on a ventilator as his health stabilises after battling pneumonia. The Pontiff, hospitalised for 16 days at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, continues to recover under supplemental high-flow oxygenation. Despite his fragile condition, the Vatican confirmed he has not required mechanical ventilation and remains fever-free.

In their latest update, the Vatican stated, “The Holy Father’s clinical condition has remained stable. He does not have a fever, but given the complexity of his condition, the prognosis remains guarded.” Pope Francis spent a peaceful night in the hospital, alternating between rest, prayer, and participating in Holy Mass with his caregivers.

Concerns about his health escalated last week when a coughing fit led to non-invasive ventilation. However, he has since shown improvement, resuming his daily routines, including drinking coffee and reading newspapers. Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra visited him, underscoring the Church’s support during his recovery.

Despite his illness, Pope Francis remains actively engaged with global issues. He recently returned to X (formerly Twitter) to thank followers for their prayers, saying, “I feel all your affection and closeness and, at this particular time, I feel as if I am ‘carried’ and supported by all God’s people.” He also offered prayers for conflict-ridden regions, including Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, and Sudan, highlighting his unwavering commitment to peace and humanitarian causes.

Pope Francis’ health challenges are compounded by a history of lung issues, including the removal of part of one lung in his youth. His current hospitalisation followed a severe bout of bronchitis that developed into pneumonia in both lungs.

As the Catholic world continues to pray for his recovery, the Vatican remains cautiously optimistic. The Pope’s resilience and dedication to his spiritual duties, even while hospitalised, have inspired millions worldwide. His condition will be closely monitored in the coming days as he works toward a full recovery.

This update brings hope to the faithful, who remain united in prayer for the beloved Pontiff’s health and swift return to his papal duties.
