Polar Vortex Strikes US, Bringing Extreme Cold

Read Time:56 Second

A polar vortex is sweeping across the United States, bringing dangerously low temperatures. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings as this mass of Arctic cold air shifts from its usual position over the Arctic, moving into the central and eastern parts of the country.

The disturbance has disrupted the jet stream, pushing freezing temperatures into over half of the U.S. by January 4. Even southern states like Louisiana and Texas are experiencing sub-zero temperatures, with some areas in Texas reaching as low as -10°C.

This cold front has also triggered a powerful snowstorm, affecting around 63 million Americans. The eastern U.S. has been hit with heavy snowfall since Sunday. While the snow will ease overnight from Monday to Tuesday, the cold will linger. By midweek, temperatures could drop to -18°C in the central plains.

Authorities are advising residents to take precautions as hazardous conditions, including icy roads and potential power outages, are expected. With the cold wave set to last for several days, those in impacted areas should stay informed and take safety measures to endure this intense winter weather.
