Sergio Perez has officially ended his association with Red Bull Racing, concluding a four-year stint with the team. His departure follows a challenging 2024 season, where he struggled for form and slipped to eighth place in the drivers’ championship standings.
A Tough Season Leads to Early Exit
Although Perez signed a contract extension earlier this year to remain with Red Bull until 2026, his difficulties with the RB20 car and inability to match the pace of teammate Max Verstappen proved pivotal. Speculation surrounding his future persisted throughout the season, with the decision to part ways finalized after discussions following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
In a heartfelt statement released on Wednesday, Perez expressed his appreciation for his time with the team:
“Driving for Red Bull has been an unforgettable experience, and I will always cherish the success we achieved together. We broke records, reached remarkable milestones, and I’ve had the privilege of meeting so many incredible people along the way.”
He extended gratitude to Red Bull’s management, staff, and his global fanbase, particularly his supporters in Mexico. Perez signed off with an inspiring note:
“Never give up.”
Perez’s Contribution to Red Bull
Perez joined Red Bull in 2021, bringing experience and stability to the team. Over his first three seasons, he was instrumental in helping Red Bull secure two constructors’ championships, finishing fourth, third, and second in the drivers’ standings during that period.
However, 2024 proved to be a challenging year as Red Bull faced stronger competition and dropped to third in the constructors’ championship. Perez struggled to adapt to the RB20 car’s characteristics, further complicating the team’s campaign.
Red Bull’s Plans for the Future
Red Bull has not yet confirmed who will replace Perez in the seat alongside Verstappen. Liam Lawson, a highly-regarded talent from Red Bull’s junior program, is seen as the favorite. His promotion would create an opportunity for another junior driver, such as Formula 2 runner-up Isack Hadjar, to join the Racing Bulls team.
Yuki Tsunoda, Lawson’s more seasoned teammate, remains in the running, but Lawson’s recent performances have positioned him as the leading contender.
Perez’s Path Forward
With no available seats in Formula 1 for 2025, Perez faces the prospect of stepping away from the grid after an illustrious 14-season career. Since making his debut with Sauber in 2011, he has achieved 39 podium finishes, six race victories, and three pole positions.
His first win came at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix with Racing Point, while his most recent triumph was in Baku last year. While there had been discussions about Perez taking on an ambassadorial role with Red Bull, those plans have been set aside, leaving his future in motorsport uncertain.
Red Bull’s Farewell
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner acknowledged Perez’s significant contributions:
“Sergio has played an essential role in our success over the past few years. We wish him the very best for the future.”
Perez’s departure signals the end of an era at Red Bull, while offering the team a chance to rejuvenate its lineup. For Perez, it’s an opportunity to reflect on his achievements and prepare for the next chapter in his career.
As Red Bull looks to announce Verstappen’s new teammate for the 2025 season, all eyes remain on their decision and its impact on the future of Formula 1.
