OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has acquired the high-value domain Chat.com, a notable addition to its assets. TechCrunch reports that HubSpot co-founder and CTO Dharmesh Shah bought the domain in 2023 for around $15.5 million, ranking it among the most expensive domain sales to date.
Originally registered in September 1996, Chat.com has grown in value with the surge of AI chatbots. Although OpenAI hasn’t revealed what it paid for the domain, the acquisition aligns with its strategy to lead in the AI chatbot market.
OpenAI has confirmed that Chat.com will not be used for a ChatGPT rebrand, as the domain now directs users to the ChatGPT platform. This strategic move highlights OpenAI’s goal of enhancing accessibility to its AI services through memorable, top-tier web domains.
